The Necessary Stage’s Theatre for Seniors is back with Encore II: Heartland! Heartland!
Featuring a series of short plays mostly written and devised by the participants, Encore II: Heartland! Heartland! depicts the Singaporean lifestyle in the high-rise buildings of HDB heartlands. Meet colourful characters in our public spaces such as coffeeshops, elevators, void decks and even markets. Peek behind their closed doors to witness domestic and familial scenes that reflect our common basic struggle for existence.
Some of the plays featured in Encore II: Heartland! Heartland! include:
- "Void Deck": A play of three episodes touches our heartstrings when a Malay cleaner takes pity on a desolate Chinese lady who sits alone daily at the void deck.
- "Mosquito Problem”: Three aunties get into an argument when an inspector discovers mosquitoes breeding in a pot of water. Who's the culprit?
- "Lady Don't Run" hints that our landless "pigeon-holes" are quite valuable as a deluge of flyers from property agents attracts great interest to a lonely and funny old geezer.
- "The Wedding" brings together a dumb-dumb groom, a goody-goody best man, four pretty mean "Ah Yee" (auntie) and an old "kan-cheong Ah Yee" (auntie who is uptight), giving the audience a delightful, palatable "rojak" (colloquial expression for an eclectic mix).
In the midst of these stories, the residents launch a contest to nominate and find the estate's best neighbour so as to foster good community relationship.
What will be unveiled as we explore the stories within the heartlands? The Necessary Stage’s Theatre for Seniors invites you to be part of this journey!
Encore II: Heartland! Heartland! is a multiligual production (with English surtitles).
